Royal Ascot Friday card goes ahead following rain and track inspection

Day four of Royal Ascot goes ahead following an inspection, it has been announced.

The prestigious card, featuring the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, had been under threat after relentless rain at the track.

A delegation of officials were out on the racecourse checking conditions at around 12.45pm – and the ground was found to be raceable.

A tweet from the British Horseracing Authority said: "Following an inspection at @Ascot, racing goes ahead."

Trainers Aidan O'Brien, Ralph Beckett and jockeys Frankie Dettori and Oisin Murphy were in the group carrying out an assessment of the going, which has turned soft, heavy in places.

A total of 26mm of rainfall hit the Berkshire track between the end of Thursday's action and 11am on Friday.

Some false patches of ground were reported, with the home turn one of the most affected areas.

Had it been abandoned, contingency plans included running a ten-race card on Saturday.

However, Friday's programme, starting with the Albany Stakes at 2.30pm, will be proceed in its entirety.

A statement from Ascot Racecourse said: "Racing goes ahead today at Ascot with a full card as planned after an inspection involving officials, trainers and jockeys.

"The stalls for the Coronation Stakes will be moved slightly and there will be some rail movements with distance amendments to be confirmed shortly."

The Commonwealth Cup (3.40pm) and Coronation Stakes (4.20pm) are the top level contests among the seven scheduled races.

The going change has led to a significant number of non-runners however.

Trainer Ed Walker has taken Primo Bacio out of the Coronation Stakes and Clive Cox will not run Diligent Harry or Supremacy in the Commonwealth Cup.

At the time of writing, 24 horses have been scratched from their respective races.
