Roy Keane's dad Maurice dead: 'Mossie' Keane dies after long battle with illness

The father of legendary Manchester United footballer Roy Keane as passed away.

Maurice Keane, commonly known as Mossie, had been ill for some time after suffering a stroke last November.

He passed away in the Heather Care Home of Cork's Orthopedic Hospital on Wednesday.

Maurice's removal will take place on Friday, while his funeral Mass will take place on Saturday.

Unlike his son, Maurice did not have a footballing background - although he was fond of the sport.

Many of Keane's family members played a variety of sports for different junior clubs in Cork and Maurice encouraged his son to go into football.

During his working life, Maurice accepted work in a series of different jobs, including one at a local knitwear company in Cork and another at Murphy's Irish Stout brewery.

Maurice's son, Roy, would go on to become one of the most iconic footballers in the modern Manchester United era.

He went on to win seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League during his time at Old Trafford.

Keane played 480 times for Manchester United, scoring 51 times.
