Rishi Sunak FINALLY publishes tax return - sneaking it out during Partygate hearing

Multi-millionaire Rishi Sunak has finally lifted the lid on his vast wealth as he published details of his tax affairs - months after first vowing to do so.

The summary shows the Prime Minister's own income totalled over £1.9million in the financial year 2021-22 alone - with a staggering tax bill of £432,493.

His vast income includes £1.6million in capital gains from a single US-based investment fund, and almost £330,000 from interest on savings and dividends.

It also lists his salary from his role as MP and Prime Minister of £156,163.

The Tory leader first pledged to publish his tax returns during his failed leadership campaign against Liz Truss in the summer of 2022 - and again after he entered No10.

In recent weeks he faced criticism for the delay in releasing the details.

Last year the PM became the first frontline politician to appear on The Sunday Times' Rich List alongside his wife , Akshata Murty, with their net worth of £730million.

The details released by No10 also show Mr Sunak's income for the tax years 2019-2020 and 2020-21. He paid £133,589 and £285,382 in tax respectively.

In the financial year 2021-22 his income stood at over £1.7million.

But the timing of his decision to publish his tax return - as ex-PM Boris Johnson was giving evidence under oath over the Partygate scandal - raised eyebrows in some quarters.

It was also on the same day as the Commons voted on Mr Sunak's new deal on post-Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland.

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner tweeted: "Wonder why he's chosen today?"

Liberal Democrat Cabinet Office spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: "After months of promising to release his tax returns, I don't understand why Rishi Sunak has snuck them out whilst the world is distracted with Boris Johnson's partygate grilling."

She added: "People will be much more concerned today about the staggering tax hikes Rishi Sunak has imposed on them.

"The blunt truth is that we should judge politicians on their actions, not their wealth.

"Rishi Sunak will be remembered as the tax hiking Prime Minister and no Boris Johnson distraction will stop that."

Mr Sunak's family's tax finances previously came under the spotlight as Chancellor in Mr Johnson's Government when the "non-dom" status of his wife was revealed.

The arrangement reportedly saved her millions as Brits faced a cost-of-living crisis.

Following the controversy, Ms Murty, the fashion designer billionaire's daughter who married Mr Sunak in 2009, declared that she would pay UK taxes on all her worldwide income.
