Retirement home fire kills 11 elderly residents as they become trapped inside

Eleven elderly people were killed in a fire at a retirement home after they became trapped inside.

The victims had mobility problems which meant they couldn't be evacuated easily after the blaze broke out in the early hours in the village of Ishbuldino, Russia.

The fire was reported at the House of Mercy home at about 3am (2200 GMT Monday) in the Urals mountains region took three hours to put out.

"Four people evacuated (the site) on their own before the arrival of firefighters," a spokesperson for Russia's emergencies ministry said.

One of the survivors was a staff member, while three others were residents she managed to lead out of the one-storey wooden building.

Russia's investigative committee said it has launched a probe into the incident. The cause is currently unknown.

The deadly fire comes just two days after a gas explosion in the UK destroyed an entire house.

Shocking pictures show the wreckage of the building in Bourne, Lincolnshire, following the blast, which happened shortly before 9.15am on Sunday.

Incredibly the male occupant escaped with only minor injuries, Lincolnshire Live reports.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the blast, which caused the front of the two-storey house to collapse.
