Rafael Nadal reveals he is expecting his first child with wife Mery Perello

Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has revealed that his wife Mery Perello is pregnant with their first child.

Nadal and Perello tied the knot in October 2019 after dating for 14 years and are now set to welcome their first child. Fresh from his French Open victory earlier this month, Nadal appeared at a press conference in Mallorca where he revealed the news.

"If all goes well, I'm going to be a father," he told reporters on Friday. "I'm not used to talking about my personal life, prefer to keep a low-profile. I don't anticipate this meaning a change to my professional life."

Nadal also confirmed that he is planning to play at Wimbledon this summer as he aims for a third consecutive Grand Slam win. "My intention is to play Wimbledon," he added.

"I have trained well this week and my departure on Monday for London is to that effect. My foot situation must be evaluated day after day, so at this moment I don't have this certainty of being able to play.

"I just know that I want to play the tournament, but we must also be careful. Now it's too early to give a definitive answer.

"In the first days I had complicated feelings, day after day I got better. One more week of training in London and I hope to be able to play at Wimbledon and to be competitive to do so."

Nadal could complete his first ever calendar Grand Slam, having already won the Australian Open and the French Open. Only two men have ever completed the feat, Don Budge and Rod Laver, with Laver's success in 1969 the most recent instance.

Nadal has come close before, winning the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in 2010. However, he came up short in that year's Australian Open, getting eliminated in the quarter-finals by Andy Murray.
