Breaking: Public bus hijacked and set alight in Belfast

Emergency services are on the scene after a double-decker bus was on fire in Belfast on Sunday night.

It is reported that police and fire services are in attendance at an incident involving a Translink Metro Bus. It is believed that the vehicle was set alight.

A helicopter has also been deployed.

Police said four men boarded the double decker bus and ordered passengers off.

A Translink spokesperson said: “The driver and small number of passengers safely disembarked. Our driver is badly shaken and is currently being supported by colleagues.

“We are very disappointed by this intimidating attack on our member of staff and public transport services in the area. We utterly condemn this behaviour and will be working closely with the PSNI to investigate this incident”.

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: "@Translink_NI buses are paid for & owned by the people of Northern Ireland. Without them people can't get to & from work, or school, or hospital appointments. Our bus drivers are working class people who deserve to be safe in their jobs. What does this madness achieve?!"

South Antrim MLA John Blair also took to Twitter to comment on the videos and images of the bus which began circling on social media around 8.30pm on November 7.

The video shows the bus ablaze with smoke billowing out from the side of the vehicle.

He said: "Reports of bus being burnt at Rathcoole, if accurate, are deeply disturbing. I cannot condem strongly enough this incident & blantant destruction of property. I hope the driver and passengers were unharmed. Any information, please contact @PoliceServiceNI".

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police received a report of a hijacking incident in the Church Road area of Newtownabbey at around 7.45pm on Sunday evening.

"It was reported that four men got onto the bus and ordered passengers off before the bus was then set alight. Church Road is currently closed and diversions are in place and police would ask members of the public to avoid the area."
