Primark founder Arthur Ryan dead at the aged of 83

The founder of Primark Arthur Ryan has died at the age of 83, the company has confirmed.

The Irishman has passed away after a short illness.

He founded Primark in 1969 and ran the company for 40 years as chief executive.

Ten years ago Ryan gave up his day-to-day control of the firm as chief executive but became chairman instead.

Primark boss Paul Marchant said: "Arthur Ryan was a truly gifted retailer and a visionary leader.

"He was a true retail pioneer. He innovated and was never complacent, despite many successes.

"He challenged us all to be the best we can be.

“His legacy will continue in the business that he founded and built.

"Those of us who worked closely with him will cherish his friendship and wisdom and he will be hugely missed by all of his Primark family.”

Mr Ryan, born in Dublin, never gave interviews about his business and always sought to protect his privacy.

Ryan's son, Barry, who was 51, died while attempting to save his son and his son's girlfriend from drowning during a freak accident on June 28 2015.
