Premier League release statement as two people test positive for COVID-19

The Premier League have tonight confirmed that two further people have tested positive for COVID-19.

Results at the start of the week found that six people - players and staff - had tested positive from three different clubs. Those six are still self-isolating.

And more tests have been carried out, with just two people now testing positive from two clubs.

Players and staff at Premier League clubs received their results on Saturday after they were carried out at training grounds up and down the country from Tuesday to Friday.

In total, 996 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19 in the second round, with the number of tests available to clubs increasing from 40 to 50 from the first batch of testing.

Earlier in the week, the Premier League confirmed that 748 players and club staff had been tested for Covid-19 between the 17th and 18th of May, with six tests coming back positive.

Included in those who tested positive were Watford's Adrian Mariappa and two members of the club's non-playing staff, and Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan.

Those six who tested positive are currently self-isolating for seven days and cannot attend their club’s training ground.

The Premier League also confirmed earlier this week that they will not be disclosing any clubs or individuals who have tested positive for coronavirus due to “legal and operational requirements”.

“The Premier League can today confirm that on Tuesday 19 May, Thursday 21 May and Friday 22 May, 996 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, two have tested positive from two clubs,” a statement from the Premier League released on Saturday night read.

“Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.

“For the second round of testing, the number of tests available to each club was increased from 40 to 50.

“Previously, 748 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19 on 17-18 May, with six testing positive from three clubs.

“The six who tested positive in the first round of testing are not included in the figures for 19-22 May, as they are still within their seven-day self-isolation period.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
