Premier League confirm Black Lives Matters support with shirt messages when season resumes

The Premier League have confirmed that they will support players' wishes to have their names replaced by Black Lives Matters on the back of their shirts when the division returns next week.

A Black Lives Matter logo will also feature on shirts for the remainder of the season, along with a badge thanking the NHS for their work amid the coronavirus crisis.

A statement from players from all 20 clubs released on Friday evening read: "We, the Players, stand together with the singular objective of eradicating racial prejudice wherever it exists, to bring about a global society of inclusion, respect, and equal opportunities for All, regardless of their colour or creed.

"This symbol is a sign of unity from all Players, all Staff, all Clubs, all Match Officials and the Premier League #blacklivesmatter #playerstogether."

The statement added: "The Premier League stands alongside players, clubs, The FA, EFL, PFA, LMA, PGMOL and all those who oppose discrimination in any form."

A number of teams have already shown their support for the movement, with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool taking a knee during training.

The Premier League have confirmed they will support any player who chooses to celebrate a goal by taking a knee or doing so ahead of kick-off.

There have been a number of nods to the movement by players in the Bundesliga, with Borussia Monchengladbach's Marcus Thuram taking a knee after a goal and Dortmund's Jadon Sancho revealing a T-Shirt which read "Justice for George Floyd" after scoring, for which he was shown a yellow card.

The Black Lives Matter movement has grown in prominence since the death of black American man Floyd, who was killed by police in the American city of Minneapolis last month, and protests have taken place all over the world.

The Premier League gets back underway next Wednesday, with Aston Villa taking on Sheffield United and Manchester City hosting Arsenal.
