Person found dead on railway line near Bolton station

A person has died on the railway near Bolton station, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the line between Bolton and Salford Crescent at 2pm this afternoon (Wednesday, January 12) following reports of a 'casualty on the tracks'.

The British Transport Police said in a statement: "British Transport Police were called to the line near Bolton at 2pm today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

After 2pm this afternoon, train operator Northern said in a Tweet: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Bolton and Salford Crescent the line is blocked, in both directions.

"Train services between these stations will be cancelled, delayed by up to 40 minutes or diverted."

The National Rail Enquiries website says disruption is expected to last until 4pm.

Rail replacement transport has been requested to run between Bolton and Manchester stations.

"Journey times may be extended by up to 40 minutes when using road replacement transport," National Rail said.
