Female pedestrian 'in her 30s' is tragically killed after being hit by tram

A female pedestrian in her 30s has tragically been killed after being hit by a tram in Greater Manchester, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the scene close to Droylsden Metrolink station, in Tameside, around 8pm, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Greater Manchester Police have closed Market Street and there is a heavy emergency services presence at the junction with Manchester Road, close to the post office.

A woman in her 30s has now been confirmed as the victim and police have launched an investigation into what happened.

Tram services between Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Piccadilly have been suspended as emergency crews work at the scene.

A tweet from GMP said: "Police are investigating a fatal collision between a tram and a pedestrian. Emergency services are in attendance.

"A woman - in her 30's - has sadly been pronounced dead. No arrests have been made. #Market Street remains closed whilst enquiries are ongoing."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just after 8pm this evening, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were asked by police to attend Market Street in Droylsden where a tram has collided with a pedestrian.

"GMFRS are in attendance at the scene alongside Greater Manchester Police and there is likely to be some disruption in the area."

People quickly took to social media to offer their condolences.

One person tweeted: "Tragedy," and another wrote: "So sorry for their family this is horrible."

Police have stated that they are working to "establish the full circumstances of the situation" (MEN Media)

Earlier GMP tweeted: “#INCIDENT | Police are currently dealing with an incident on #Market Street in #Droyslden. The road is closed as police are working to establish the full circumstances of the situation.

“There is no wider risk to the public and updates will follow shortly.”

A statement on the Metrolink website reads: “Due to a police incident, there are no services operating on the Ashton line, between Piccadilly and Ashton. Tickets and passes are being accepted on the 216 and 217 bus service. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to your journey this evening

“Ticket acceptance is in place to allow customers to travel via 216 & 217 bus services.”
