Paul Darrow dead: Blake's 7 and Doctor Who star dies aged 78

Blake's 7, Emmerdale and Doctor Who star Paul Darrow has died aged 78.

His representative confirmed he died this morning, saying the world would be a 'darker place' without him.

“Over three decades I have been Paul’s confidante and have had the immense privilege of being part of his life," the spokeswoman told the Daily Express.

“A star has gone out today; the world will be a darker place without him.”

In 2014 Darrow suffered an aortic aneurysm and had to have both legs amputated - one above the knee and another below it.

Wheelchair-bound, he became the voice of 'Jack' on independent Oxford radio station Union JACK, which today shared a its own tribute.

"Shocked and saddened to announce this news today," the station tweeted.

“We've lost a true gent - the iconic voice of Union JACK. We're still taking it in. Thanks for everything, Paul Darrow.”

The Surrey-born star played Kerr Avon in the BBC's sci-fi series Blake's 7 and starred as Captain Hawkins in the 1970 serial, Doctor Who and the Silurians.

The BBC said it was "very sorry to hear" of the his passing.

Darrow also appeared in Emmerdale in July 2009 as Eddy Fox, a friend of Alan Turner's, and had a minor role in Hollyoaks.

Last year, he took part in a celebrity edition of the gameshow Pointless, alongside his Blake's 7 co-star Michael Keating.
