One in 220 had Covid-19 in England as infections hit lowest rate since October

One in 220 people in private households had coronavirus in England last week, marking the lowest level since the start of October.

The Office for National Statistics estimated that 248,100 people in the community in the week up to February 27 had COVID-19, equating to around one in 220 people.

This is down from around one in 145 - or 373,700 people - between February 13 and 19.

It marks the lowest figure since the week to October 1 when one in 240 were estimated to have the virus, or 224,400 people.

Across the UK, the numbers were lowest in Scotland, where around one in 335 people were estimated to have the virus, down from one in 225 in the week to February 19.

In Wales, around one in 285 people are estimated to have had Covid-19 - down from the previous ONS estimate of one in 205.

In Northern Ireland, around one in 325 people had the virus, down from one in 195.

The numbers of positive tests have fallen across England except for north-east England, the East Midlands and eastern England, where the trend is uncertain, the ONS said.

The North East has the highest proportion of people testing positive, with around one in 150 people, followed by the West Midlands with one in 160 people.

In the East Midlands it was one in 185, with one in 190 in the North West and one in 195 for London.

One in 225 people tested positive in Yorkshire and the Humber, one in 260 for eastern England, one in 340 for south-east England, and one in 365 for south-west England.

The fall in infections comes ahead of the first phase of Boris Johnson's roadmap out of lockdown, with schools due to reopen on Monday.

People will also be allowed to sit down on a bench for a coffee with a friend or have a picnic in a park with another person in a tweak to restrictions.

It comes ahead of a more substantial relaxation of the rules on March 29, when groups of up to six people will be allowed to meet outside.

Organised outdoor sport will be able to resume, alongside the reopening of outdoor leisure facilities such as swimming pools.

The stay at home order will also lift but people are still urged to minimise travel.
