Norwich relegated from Premier League following defeat to West Ham

Norwich have been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship for a record fifth time.

The Canaries needed to avoid defeat to West Ham on Saturday afternoon to keep their fight going for at least another week.

But a Michail Antonio quartet of goals confirmed their demotion to the second tier a year after they were promoted having won the Championship.

The Norfolk club now hold the unwanted record for the most relegations from the Premier League - having previously suffered the drop in the 1994/95, 2004/05, 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons.

Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Crystal Palace have all been reelegated four times since the Premier League was founded in 1991/92.

Norwich have endured a shocking restart since the coronavirus lockdown - with the side failing to win any of their six fixtures.

In truth, the Canaries' struggles have lasted longer than the break, with only five wins coming all year.

Only Finnish striker Teemu Pukki has reached double figures in terms of goals, and only 19th placed Aston Villa have shipped more than Norwich's 63 goals.

Villa and Bournemouth are favourites to join the Canaries in the Championship next season, with Watford easing their worries with a victory over Newcastle.

"It is hard for me to talk," midfielder Alex Tettey told BT Sport.

"That was a tough game for us and we tried to come out and be positive but when you don't do what we have to do on the pitch you get punished.

"For all those four goals we can’t defend like that, it’s very very tough. I’ve been saying this the whole season – at the end it doesn’t end up being a positive game and it’s tough to get yourselves going mentally.

"This club has not been a club that buys well established players, if you have a group and a collective that you’re trying to create you need to be consistent.

"We’ve been in games sometimes but we don’t have the mentality or character to get those wins.

"This is a young group in their first season in the Premier League and now they have that experience of the Premier League."
