Nigel Farage's Brexit Party accepts £1 million in big money donations

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party took more than £1 million in big money donations in its first three months.

Details of the party’s bulging election war chest came as Farage declared his group was ready to wipe out the Tories in an autumn election.

When he founded the party Mr Farage said he hoped it would be largely funded by small donations of less than £500.

But between 1 April and 30 June 2019, the party accepted £1,039,000 from a handful of wealthy donors and companies.

Financier Jeremy Hosking gave almost £250,000 to the fledgling party in the months following its founding.

And George Farmer, the fiancee of US pro-Trump activist Candace Owens, gave £100,000.

Overall during the same period the Conservative Party took the most in donations, with £5,344,058. Labour received £2,019,236 and the Lib Dems were given £1,272,267.

Writing in the Telegraph yesterday, Farage warned Boris Johnson the 'honeymoon' is over.

He wrote: "The summer is over and with it, I would suggest, is Boris Johnson’s brief honeymoon period.

"If Johnson does choose to sell out his own people by consigning Britain to such a position of weakness, the Brexit Party would have no choice but to fight him in every seat at the next national poll."

In June, the Brexit Party has been told to check the £2.5 million understood to have been donated to it in small amounts, to ensure it hasn't accepted cash from foreign donors.

The Party will be required to satisfy itself that every single £25 'supporter' fee was not from an impermissible source.

If they can't, they'll have to either return it to the donor or hand it over to the Treasury.

Today's figures, released this morning by the Electoral Commission, show the party has already had to return £10,000 worth of big ticket donations because they are from impermissible sources.

One donation, valued at £1,000, was apparently returned because the name attached to it was simply "X".
