Dwayne Haskins dead: NFL star tragically dies aged 24 after being hit by vehicle

NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins has tragically passed away at the age of just 24 after getting hit by a vehicle in South Florida on Saturday.

Haskins was a standout prospect at Ohio State, before getting picked up by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2019 draft. However, he was released the following year before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Haskins, who was set to turn 25 on May 3rd, was the backup quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph last year. He was in South Florida training with the other Steelers quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

Florida Highway Patrol said Haskins was struck by a dump truck while walking on a highway in Fort Lauderdale for "unknown reasons" and was attempting to cross when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said: "I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community.

"Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time."

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray paid tribute to Haskins on social media, tweeting: "RIP Dwayne Haskins.. heartbreaking… Prayers to his family & loved ones. Love yours while they're here!"

Former Cleveland Browns and Steelers quarterback Joe Haden tweeted: "Tell YOUR loved ONEs…. tHAT YOU LOVE THEM!!! Life is so short!! Rip Dwayne Haskins!"

Baseball player Marcus Stroman posted: "Heartbreaking. RIP Dwayne Haskins! Sending blessings and prayers to his family! Life is precious.

"We’re always reminded. Incredibly sad to see young kings and queens, with their entire life ahead of them, gone too soon. Love your people and find your happiness daily!"
