Breaking news Dublin: Pair charged in relation to burglaries after huge M50 car chase that left garda injured

Two men have been charged in relation to a spate of Dublin burglaries which was followed by a huge car chase on the M50 that left one Garda injured.

The chase, which involved the Garda helicopter, began on the M50 on Thursday night and continued onto the M1.

Three men were arrested following the incident but one of those people, a youth, was released without charge with a file being prepared for the Juvenile Liaison Office.

The pair - both in their 20s - have been charged in relation to the burglaries and will appear before Dun Laoghaire District Court on Monday morning.

Gardai had been on night patrol following a number of burglaries in Blackrock in south Dublin, and noticed a suspicious car while out in Tallaght.

After spotting the car once again at Junction 13 (Sandyford/Dundrum) on the M50, gardai went in pursuit.

It was eventually abandoned near Dundalk on the M1, and the men who were in the car fled on foot.

Three males, one in his 20s, and two others in their late teens were arrested while another is still being sought by gardai.

A garda spokeswoman said at the time: "Gardaí in Dundalk have arrested three individuals in connection with burglaries carried out in the Blackrock, area of Co Dublin which occurred on January 30th 2020.

"On Thursday 30th January 2020, Gardaí on patrol in Tallaght, observed a car acting in a suspicious manner. Following reports of a number of burglaries in the Blackrock area, Gardaí on night patrols, with the assistance of the Air Support Unit monitored traffic and carried out patrols of the area.

"Gardaí observed this vehicle again on the M50 at Junction 13 and a managed Garda pursuit ensued. Four occupants abandoned the offending vehicle on the M1 at junction 18 and fled on foot towards fields nearby.

"Three males, one aged in his 20s, another in his late teens and one male youth also in his late teens, were arrested a short distance away and are currently detained under Section 50, Criminal Justice Act, 2007 in Dundalk Garda Station.

"A fourth occupant of the car is still being sought by Gardaí in connection with this incident. It’s believed the car involved in this incident is the subject of an unauthorised taking in the UK jurisdiction.

"One Garda member was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. Property from one burglary in Blackrock was recovered on the M50 by Gardaí. Investigations ongoing."
