New York blackout: Major power outage leaves large part of city in darkness

A major power outage left large areas of New York city in darkness this morning.

People in the city have been sharing images of the "pitch black" streets after reporting the lights going out in Manhattan's Upper West Side.

One man living in the Big Apple tweeted: "Surreal right now in a large part of #Manhattan. No power whatsoever."

Another said: "Whoa. That looks like something out of a horror movie."

Electricity provider Con Edison said in a tweet it was investigating the outage on Friday which has affected more than 40,000 people.

"We're investigating multiple outages from Harlem to the Upper East Side, and Central Park," a spokesperson told Fox News.

The outage was reported at around 5.15am and has now been restored.

The power outage had knocked out not only lights but also cellphone services, according to CNBC.

"We are investigating a problem on our transmission system that caused three networks in Manhattan to lose their electric supply at about 5:13 this morning," Con Edison said in a tweet

Subways and trains have been impacted, with several experiencing delays and disruptions, reports say.
