Myanmar landslide: At least 62 dead and 13 missing after jade mine collapses

At least 62 people have reportedly died and 13 are missing after a landslide at a jade mine in northern Myanmar.

Miners were collecting stones when a "muddy wave" caused by heavy rain buried them at around 6.30am local time.

The tragedy happened in the jade-rich Hpakant area of Kachin state, in the north of the country.

"Now in total 50 dead bodies," the country's fire service earlier said in a Facebook post.

"We are still working on the rescue process."

It continued: "The jade miners were smothered by a wave of mud, which hit after heavy rainfall."

Village adminstrator Kyaw Min later told News Eleven: “There are now 62 people (who have died).

"There are 13 missing persons listed. There may be more. Relief and relief teams are coming."

It is the latest in a long line of deadly mudslides and accidents, which are common in the region's poorly regulated mines.

A landslide in the area killed 116 people in 2015.

And last year more than 100 people died in similar incidents in Hpakant - which is the site of the world's biggest jade mine.

The jade trade in Myanmar is reported to be worth more than £24bn per year.
