BREAKING: Move to downgrade one-third of West Dunbartonshire results is reversed

The move to downgrade pupil exam results - which affected more than one-third of West Dunbartonshire students - has been reversed.

Education Secretary, John Swinney, confirmed this afternoon that the downgrades would be scrapped.

Mr Swinney, who apologised to parliament, said initial teacher-based estimates would be used instead.

A total of 36 percent of pupils in West Dunbartonshire had their estimated results downgraded.

West Dunbartonshire politicians said they had been inundated with calls from furious teachers, parents and pupils after some students were awarded grades lower than expected.

Mr Swinney made the u-turn ahead of a vote of no confidence in him, which will take place on Thursday.

It follows the furious backlash to a "moderation" system which has seen more than 120,000 results downgraded by the SQA.

Final grades will now be based on the original estimates provided by teachers.

Mr Swinney told Holyrood: "I want to apologise."

John Swinney has announced the cancellation of pupil grades that were lowered during the school results fiasco.

The Education Secretary, who issued an apology, said the downgrades would be reversed and the initial teacher-based estimates would be used instead.

Mr Swinney and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had initially defended the system, but a public outcry led to today’s u-turn.

His statement followed an apology by Ms Sturgeon.

She said: “We’re saying we didn’t get this right and I want to say again to young people that I’m sorry for that.”

Sturgeon added: "This situation is not the fault of students and so it should not be on students to fix it, that’s on us."
