Mortal Instruments actor Godfrey Gao dies on set aged 35

Actor Godfrey Gao has died at the age of 35 after suffering an apparent heart attack while on set in China.

His agency, JetStar Entertainment, confirmed his death.

The Taiwanese-Canadian model-actor initially rose to fame by becoming the first Asian male model for the luxury brand Louis Vuitton.

He acted in numerous television dramas and movies, including a role in the Hollywood film The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones.

He also made a name for himself in China when he starred in the popular TV drama Remembering Lichuan.

Godfrey was taking part in a reality TV show called Chase Me, which sees teams competing to win a race.

But the show producers were left reeling when the star collapsed during filming and lost consciousness.

He was rushed to hospital but died there, say the show's bosses.

"Guest participant Godfrey suddenly collapsed to the ground while running. The programme's on-site paramedics began lifesaving measures immediately and urgently transported him to the hospital," said Chase Me's management in a statement.

"After two hours of all-out efforts to save him, the hospital [said] he had suffered a sudden cardiac death."

The show is designed to test participants to their limits and only accepts contestants who are in good physical shape.

The production company told Chinese media that everyone involved in the show feels "incomparable pain" and added that they and Godfrey's family will be jointly arranging his funeral.

Godfrey - real name Tsao Chih-Hsiang - also appeared in Chinese TV series Never Give Up Dodo, God Of War Zhao Yun and in the films Legend Of The Ancient Sword, Shanghai Fortress and The Jade Pendant.

He was also supposed to be starring in the upcoming movie The Wedding Bible as Chikai.
