Monsoon Accessorize reportedly planning wave of shop closures

Fashion chain Monsoon Accessorize is planning a wave of shop closures, according to reports.

"Dozens" of store closures look as if they could be announced in the next few weeks, Sky News is reporting .

‎‎The company currently has almost 270 stores in the UK, it is owned by founder Peter Simon.

According to Sky, the group has appointed Deloitte to prepare a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) that would ask for creditor approval for the closures - as well as seeking rent reductions from exising landlords.

Bigger stores with both Monsoon and Accessorize branding on the shop front are seen as the main targets for closures.

‎‎"The UK retail trading environment is tough and we are continuing to look at options to reduce our overall costs as we restructure the business in the UK and internationally," a company spokesmen told Sky News.

"We are looking at options to accelerate these store closures."

In 2018, nearly 85,000 retail jobs were lost in the UK as businesses continued to go bust.

As well as this, the number of retail outlets left empty was up by 4,400 in 2018 according to data from the Local Data Company.

This year hasn't exactly gone well either, with L.K. Bennett the latest to announce closures, following hot on the heels of Debenhams, Wetherspoon and Office Outlet.

Almost 20,000 high street jobs were lost between Christmas and Valentine's Day alone according to figures from Altus for the Press Association show 18,722 roles have been made redundant or put under threat since December 25. Of those, 14,377 jobs have been lost with another 4,345 at risk.
