Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to keep birth details secret and will celebrate privately

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will celebrate the birth of their royal baby "privately as a family", they have confirmed.

The couple have released a statement saying they will keep the details about Meghan's birth a secret for now.

It reads: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby.

"Their Royal Highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private.

"The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family."

Details of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's second date revealed - and it's was very special

The move is a break from tradition as it means Meghan will probably not pose on the hospital steps with her new baby.

The tradition was started by her late mother-in-law Princess Diana who proudly showed off Princes William and Harry on the steps of the Lindo Wing in Paddington.

Duchess of Cambridge followed in her footsteps after the birth of Prince George in July 2013 and did the same with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Just hours after giving birth Kate and William walked out of the hospital doors carrying their new arrivals to smile and wave for the world's media.

Baby Sussex is Meghan and Harry's first child, and the couple are clearly very excited to become parents.

They have given well-wishers updates throughout the pregnancy, and Meghan once compared it to being jet-lagged.

After the birth Meghan is expected to take maternity leave for several months, and Harry will also have some time off as paternity leave.

Bookies believe the couple will pick a royal name for their little one, with Diana and Elizabeth offering the best odds.

The couple moved into their new family home - Frogmore Cottage in Windsor - last week following a huge renovation, which now includes a lovely nursery.

The parents-to-be announced their pregnancy news on the eve of their Royal Tour of Australia and New Zealand at the end of last year, just a few days after Princess Eugenie's wedding.
