Man Utd call off Paulo Dybala transfer leaving Romelu Lukaku in limbo

Manchester United have walked away from the deal that would see Romelu Lukaku leave Old Trafford for Juventus and Paulo Dybala move in the other direction.

United have reservations over Dybala's wages and the Argentine's apparent lack of enthusiasm to make the switch to the north west.

It also throws Lukaku's future into further doubt and the Belgian may now be forced to stay at the Theatre of Dreams, despite wanting a move away.

Inter, who have already had a £54million bid rebuffed, could yet lure him to the San Siro but it would leave United with just a few days to find a replacement with the Premier League transfer window to slam shut on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is adamant that any player joining United buys into the club and is fully committed to restoring their status as one of Europe's big-hitters.

Dybala is understood to have requested parity with United's top earners and a legal issue over his image rights also complicated the potential switch.

Lukaku's prospects as a first-choice forward with the Red Devils look bleak after he fell down the pecking order following Solskjaer's return last season.

And promising performances in pre-season from Mason Greenwood and Tahith Chong could see the former Everton striker's playing time severely hampered.

United could yet do more business before Thursday with Solskjaer keen on strengthening his midfield.

The club are expected to formally announce the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester on Monday.

He will join Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as summer recruits.
