Man's body found under M5 bridge closing section of motorway

A man's body has been found under a bridge on the M5 - closing the road from junction 1 to the M6.

The man was discovered beneath the bridge at around 7am.

The motorway was closed northbound from Junction 1 to the M6 junction, between West Bromwich and Great Barr.

The death is being treated as unexplained.

A diversion route was set up following the incident.

West Midland Police said: "We're investigating after a man's body was found on the M5 under a bridge at around 7am today.

"The motorway is closed northbound from Junction 1 to the M6, and delays are expected.

"The death is being treated as unexplained. Follow @HighwaysWMIDS for diversion information."

There are also traffic problems on the M6 due to a lorry breaking down.

A spokesman for Highways England said there are around nine-miles of traffic on the M6, near Stafford, after an over-night roadwork lorry broke down.

They said: “There are severe delays on the M6 northbound in Staffordshire due to overnight roadworks which are overrunning due to a Hiab (lorry mounted crane) which has broken down within J14 near Stafford.

“Recovery agents are in attendance working hard to repair the vehicle so the road can be re-opened as quickly as possible.

“ The carriageway is fully closed within J14, with traffic diverting around the closure via the exit and entry slips.

“There are over 9 and a half miles of congestion, with average journey times now taking an hour and a half longer than normal for this time of day.”
