A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being stabbed following an 'altercation' in Wythenshawe.
The 46-year-old's condition in hospital was described by Greater Manchester Police as 'critical'.
The force said enquiries established he was attacked after an 'altercation'.
Police and paramedics were called to Greenwood Road in Benchill at 2.45pm on Thursday afternoon, near Manchester Enterprise Academy.
Tonight (Wednesday), officers were standing guard at the entrance to a block of flats on the road.
The pavement area outside was cordoned off with police tape.
It is understood forensic investigators were deployed earlier.
It hasn't been revealed whether the man was stabbed or slashed, but GMP said he suffered 'serious facial injuries'.
The force has now issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
No arrests have been made as yet, GMP added, and enquiries are said to be ongoing.
Officers were initially called to the scene following reports of a stabbing.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 2.45pm on Thursday, February 18, police were called to reports of a stabbing on Greenwood Road, Manchester.
"Enquiries have established that a 46-year-old man was stabbed following an altercation.
"Emergency services attended and the man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries where he remains in a critical condition.
"No arrests have been and enquiries are ongoing."
No further details have been revealed.
