The Mercedes had been travelling on the East Lancs Road before approaching a roundabout at the junction of Warrington Road, known locally as the Greyhound roundabout.

It travelled straight over the roundabout, police said.

Anyone with information or video footage is being asked to contact police.

This morning, Police Constable Karl Horner of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this dreadful time.

"They are being supported by specialist officers while our investigations continue.

"It’s vital that anyone with information, who witnessed the crash or saw the car prior to the collision gets in touch.

"We would also ask that anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage that can assist us contact police."

Anyone with information can call police on 0161 856 4741 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
