Man City Women's Super League fixture postponed over Covid-19 outbreak

The Football Association has postponed Manchester City's scheduled Women's Super League fixture on Saturday after four positive Covid-19 cases in the squad.

The City Football Academy has been hit with a number of positive Covid cases in the last two weeks, with nine members of the men's first team group testing positive and having to isolate, plus four members of staff and one player from the Elite Development Squad.

The Premier League fixture at Everton over Christmas was postponed, while the CFA was temporarily closed.

On Tuesday, City confirmed that four members of the women's first team had also tested positive, with the BBC reporting that the quartet had been in Dubai over the WSL winter break.

The trip had been with the club's blessing, and was allowed as Manchester was in Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions at the time.

Now, City have confirmed that the FA have moved to postpone the upcoming West Ham fixture in light of the four positive cases, and cited other mitigating factors among the Blues squad.

A club statement said: "Manchester City FC can confirm that Saturday’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against West Ham United has been postponed.

"The Football Association have decided to postpone the match following four positive COVID-19 cases and a number of other mitigating factors affecting the City squad.

"A new date for the game will be confirmed in due course."

West Ham issued a statement, saying the FA accepted City's request for the fixture to be postponed, adding: "The health, safety and wellbeing of the players and staff at both clubs is the overriding priority for West Ham United, Manchester City and the FA."

And FA statement said: "Manchester City provided evidence that outlined they would not be able to meet the minimum squad quota of 14 for their match due to positive COVID-19 tests and other mitigating circumstances. The players affected are now in self-isolation and we will look to reschedule their fixture with West Ham."
