Both vehicles stopped at the scene and are assisting police with their enquiries.

No arrests have been made.

A large cordon was in place between Bold Street and Marple Street last night with a huge police presence also on the scene.

Other cordons were in place on many of the adjoining side roads, including Mackworth Street and Bankwell Street.

Pictures showed specialist officers from the serious collision investigation unit (SCIU) examining the road surface and making investigations.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

"We're investigating the circumstances around what happened, and we're keen to speak with anyone who may have CCTV or DashCam footage of the incident or area at the time.
