Major Chelsea transfer confirmed as Mauricio Pochettino learns N'Golo Kante decision

Al-Ittihad have confirmed the signing of N'Golo Kante on a free transfer from Chelsea.

The 32-year-old has moved to the Saudi Pro League side after a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, where he made 269 appearances for the Blues in all competitions. Kante, who has been riddled with injury problems in recent seasons, leaves Chelsea after winning six major honours with the club over his seven years after joining from Leicester City in the summer of 2016.

The France international's contract at Chelsea was due to expire on June 30 and despite talks between the player and the club, the midfielder decided it was time for a new challenge. Confirmation of the deal was made late on Tuesday night, with an announcement from his new club.

The Frenchman will join up with compatriot Karim Benzema at Al-Ittihad, who sent his teammate a message on social media, saying: "Hi N'Golo, one time I thought you were the best player, box-to-box, in the world and now I'm happy to play with you again. And, of course, in the best team in Saudi. See you in Jeddah."

Kante responded, saying: "Thank you, Karim, nice to see you again, thank you for the words. I'm very pleased to play with you, the best player in the world, and I'm really excited to play with the Tigers and in front of the fans. Take care and see you soon."

Chelsea put out a statement on Wednesday, with co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley telling the official website: "N’Golo’s impact and influence during his time at Chelsea cannot be overstated. His tireless performances in midfield contributed to several trophy wins and has guaranteed him a place in the club’s history. We wish him well as he embarks on the next chapter in his career."

It means that the Blues are looking to add to their midfield departments once again, with new boss Mauricio Pochettino officially starting work on July 1. Christopher Nkunku was confirmed as the first first-team signing of the summer on Tuesday, with work continuing over exits before incomings.
