M62 traffic: Crash closes busy motorway in BOTH directions

A crash has closed a major motorway in both directions in rush hour.

Traffic is backing up for more than six miles eastbound on the M62 in West Yorkshire and into Greater Manchester.

Police and Highways England have shut a large section from junction 24, near Huddersfield to junction 22, for Rishworth Moor.

The crash happened near junction 23 and a separate police incident is ongoing near junction 22.

"Following an earlier incident, the motorway is closed between junctions 22 and 24 in both directions," Highways Agency said.

"Drivers heading eastbound are currently being diverted to exit at junction 22, take the A672, then the A58 to re-join the M62 at junction 26.

"Drivers heading westbound are currently being diverted to exit at junction 24, take the A629, then the A643, then the A58, and finally the A672 to re-join the M62 at junction 22."

Alternative routes, including those in the remote Pennines, are busy as a result of the smash.

The crash reportedly happened at 12.30am and West Yorkshire Police continue to investigate.

A tweet from the North West Motorway Police said: "There are likely to be delays on M62 east bound carriageway, it is closed from j22 to j24 as West Yorkshire police have a couple of incidents on the go, beware of tail backs back into the Greater Manchester area, all traffic being taken off at j22."

The M62 connects Liverpool in the west and runs 107 miles east to Hull.

It crosses the Pennines and is used by commuters heading for and leaving Manchester and Leeds every day.

The motorway was opened in 1960 and further sections were added by 1974.
