M61 crash: Girl, 12, dead and five others injured in horror motorway smash

A 12-year-old girl who died as five others were injured in a horror crash on the M61 has been named.

Sana Patel was travelling in a Nissan Qashqai when it was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa near the Bolton West services of the motorway.

Lancashire Police confirmed a 12-year-old girl who was in the Qashqai died at the scene.

Five other people who were travelling in the same vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Pictures from the scene appeared to suggest other cars may have also suffered damage after debris was spotted scattered along the motorway.

Police are now tracing the occupants of the Corsa who fled the scene on foot, reports Lancs Live.

The car has been tracked and found to be registered at an address in West Yorkshire.

Supt Andy Cribbin, of Lancashire Police, told the Manchester Evening News: "First and foremost our thoughts are with the family and friends of Sana.

"There are no words to describe what they will be going through and we send them our deepest condolences at this incredibly difficult time.

"They are currently being supported by specialist officers.

"Our investigation is in the early stages and we are working hard to establish exactly what occurred, and to locate the people who were in the Corsa.

"We are now appealing directly to them.

"We know the car is registered to an address in West Yorkshire and we are appealing for the driver and any passenger at the time of the collision to make contact with us as soon as possible.

"A twelve year old girl has tragically lost her life, so we would urge them to search their conscience and do the right thing by contacting us.

"We are also asking anybody who saw the collision, or saw either vehicle in the moments before it happened, to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

At the time of the incident, police closed both sides of the M61 overnight while they pieced together how the crash unfolded last night.

Drivers were told to be on the look out to try and see if anyone had run away.

This morning, the northbound carriageway was closed - but the motorway has now fully re-opened.

Anybody with information is asked to get in touch on 101, quoting log 1817 of July 6.
