Breaking: M53 closed 'for foreseeable future' as man dies after being hit by HGV

Police are at the scene of a fatal crash on the M53 which has closed the motorway.

The road is near junction four, according to police and Highways England, with the Merseyside force saying it would be shut for the "foreseeable future."

They released an update at 11.46am to say a man had been hit by an HGV on the Liverpool-bound carriageway, and had been pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses described a white sheet lying on a section of roadway and both North West Motorways Police (NWMP) and the North West Ambulance Service are on scene.

According to travel service Inrix:  "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, a lorry involved on M53 Northbound from J5 A41 New Chester Road (Eastham) to J4 A5137 Brimstage Road (Bebington)."

Highways England said: "All lanes are closed due to a police incident on the M53 southbound between junctions J4 and J5. This incident is not expected to clear soon."
