Lucas Torreira's Arsenal exit confirmed as midfielder joins Fiorentina

Lucas Torreira has left Arsenal for Serie A outfit Fiorentina, it has been confirmed.

As first reported by football.london, the Uruguay midfielder was close to joining the Serie A outfit after spending last season on-loan with Atletico Madrid.

Despite having lifted the La Liga title with Diego Simeone's men last term, he remains some way down the Arsenal pecking order under Mikel Arteta and has been allowed to depart north London once again.

Torreira joins Fiorentina on-loan until the end of the current campaign, with the Italian outfit retaining an option to buy. The Gunners will also receive a loan fee of £1.2million.

He will wear the number 18 shirt in Italy.

The move signals Torreira’s return to Serie A having originally joined Arsenal from Sampdoria in 2018. He went on to make 89 appearances for the Gunners in the three years since, establishing himself as a key member of Unai Emery's squad that reached the 2019 Europa League final.

Torreira also became popular with fans following his goal against Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium in a memorable 4-2 Gunners victory.

However, the now 25-year-old fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta after he replaced Emery at the helm and was allowed to join Atletico Madrid on loan last season.

He made 26 appearances in all competitions at the Wanda Metropolitano and was not brought back on a permanent deal.

Torreira's chances of regular first team football looked somewhat remote upon his return to north London, with the Gunners having signed Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht, whilst having also retained the services of Granit Xhaka. He too could have been plying his trade in Serie A for the 2021/22 campaign but a move to AS Roma broke down.
