Los Angeles earthquake: Californians describe 'jolt and shake' of tremor

An earthquake has hit Los Angeles with Californians describing being woken by a jolt and a shake in the middle of the night.

The magnitude 4.0 quake struck 25km south of Port Hueneme of the coast of Los Angeles in the US at around 2.15am local time (10.15am GMT).

It comes as a 3.8 magnitude quake hit close to Anaheim, also in California, at around 2.38am on New Year's Day.

And a 3.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Bay Area, close to San Jose in San Francisco at around 11.16pm on New Year's Day.

At the time the Los Angeles Times reported that over the last 10 days there had been three earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.

Describing the San Jose quake the paper said: "The earthquake was calculated to have generated light shaking in Morgan Hill and Gilroy south of San Jose, and weak shaking throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland."

Hundreds of people described feeling weak to light shaking to the US Geographical Survey.

This latest quake was even larger.
