Lloyds and Halifax online and mobile banking down for some customers

People have been locked out of their Lloyds and Halifax accounts due to a system error.

Website Down Detector recorded hundreds of incidents on Monday afternoon for both banks - with customers reporting they couldn't log in on social media too.

"Hello, I can't login to my account via the app or the website," Adi asked Lloyds on Twitter.

Adam had the same trouble: "It’s definitely down, I can’t get in through the app or website."

Lloyds' service availability page doesn't list any scheduled maintenance or current issues.

The banks at first said they are unaware of problems on Twitter.

"I'm not aware of any issues at the moment, Can you explain what's happening please?" Both Halifax and Lloyds representatives asked struggling cusomers.

However, within a few minutes, they had acknowledged there could be an issue.

"We're aware that some of our customers are experiencing problems with Online Banking. We are looking into this as a matter of urgency," Halifax wrote.

This is what you can do to try and get round it:

Head to business banking pages instead

Lloyds has sent out a message in the past saying people struggling to access their main internet banking pages might be able to get in through their business banking pages.

The banks sent this message out to customers on Twitter in June:

“You can log on to Internet Banking by visiting [this] link, selecting ‘Log on’ in the top-right corner & choosing ‘Personal’ or ‘Business’."

It's a long shot, but it might work again.

Halifax doesn't offer a similar service though.

Try again later

The problem will hopefully be resolved quickly, so if you can wait it's always worth checking back later.

Call

If you're still having problems, pick up the phone. Lloyds' online banking customer service number is 03453 000 116 .

If you'd rather not call an 03 number (which can cost more on some plans), you can call on 01733 232030 instead.

If you're overseas the number is: +44 1733 232030.

Lloyds also offers a range of services over its PhoneBank sevice , meaning you'll be able to check balances, pay bills and more over the phone.

You need to register for this to use it (which might take a few days), but once registered you can call on 03453 000 000 or 01733 347 007.

There's a full list of Lloyds general and emergency phone numbers here .

Halifax's number is 0345 720 3040, or if you're calling from abroad +44 (0)113 242 1984.

It's staffed 7am - 11pm, seven days a week, for existing customers.

Head to a branch or cash machine

If all you need is something simple like a balance check, any cash machine should be able to display it on screen.

If that's not enough, and they're still open, you can head to a branch.

You can search for your nearest Lloyds branch or cash machine here and Halifax one here.
