Liverpool suffer second injury blow as Virgil van Dijk off vs Chelsea in FA Cup final

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk was substituted in place of Joel Matip ahead of extra time in the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley. It came after Mohamed Salah was also forced off with a knock in the first half.

Thomas Tuchel took his side into the clash knowing that a win would see him claim his fourth trophy since taking over as manager at Stamford Bridge. Having already secured the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, a first domestic honour will have been on his radar.

The 90 minutes ended level as both sides waste gilt-edged chances. Christian Pulisic, Marcos Alonso and Romelu Lukaku saw them go begging for the Blues while Andrew Robertson, Diogo Jota and the irrepressible Luis Diaz could not find a way past Edouard Mendy. Mohamed Salah handed Chelsea a boost when he went down injured in the 30th minute and no doubt Jurgen Klopp's heart sank.

It would not be the final injury to worry Klopp either with a Champions League final against Real Madrid on the horizon as well. Hopes of Premier League title will not have vanished either, but they may have to do so without the services of Virgil van Dijk.

The colossus appeared to get through the full 90 minutes unscathed but as his teammates prepared for extra-time, the Netherlands international headed for the bench. Joel Matip was brought on in place of Van Dijk, handing another worry to Klopp ahead of the season run-in.
