Last week the total number of confirmed cases of listeriosis rose to nine.

According to health authorities, all affected sandwiches and salads were withdrawn from hospitals when the links to the listeria infections were identified, and NHS organisations were advised to halt serving Good Food Chain products to vulnerable patients.

Health officials found the potentially deadly bacteria at the North Country Cooked Meats HQ in 2009 and 2010.

The company, based in Salford, Greater Manchester, is believed to the source.

It supplied the Good Food Chain, the Staffordshire company that makes pre-packaged sandwiches, which has voluntarily ceased produuction while the investigation continues.

North Country Cook Meats has also stopped production.

The fallout after the deaths prompted Health Secretary Matt Hancock to order a review of hospital food.
