Lionel Messi SENT OFF in Copa America third placed play-off following clash with Gary Medel

Lionel Messi's recent misery for Argentina continued on Saturday night when the Barcelona star was sent off in the Copa America third-placed play-off against Chile.

Argentina were 2-0 up when Messi received his marching orders in the first half after clashing with Chile's Gary Medel, who was also shown a straight red.

Messi clashed with Medel, who played for Cardiff in the Premier League, off the pitch after the pair chased a ball going out of play.

Television replays appeared to show Messi giving Medel a little nudge and the pair squared up face-to-face in a heated stand-off before team-mates and the referee got involved.

But the match official deemed the clash serious enough to warrant two red cards, and sent both players off for an early shower.

Messi will be hoping his team can hold on to secure third place at Copa America after first-half goals from Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala have Argentina a comfortable lead.

The incident comes after Messi slammed the standard of officiating as Argentina crashed out of the Copa America with a 2-0 semi-final loss to Brazil last Wednesday.

The Argentina captain felt a number of decisions went against his side in Belo Horizonte as goals from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino in each half put Brazil through to a final against Peru.

Messi was particularly aggrieved Argentina were not awarded a penalty by referee Roddy Zambrano immediately prior to Brazil's second goal but that was only one of a number of complaints.

The 32-year-old told reporters: "They were not better than us. They found the net early and the second goal came from a penalty they didn't award.

"The officiating was crazy. There were clear penalties, on (Nicolas) Otamendi, on 'Kun' (Sergio Aguero).

"He (the referee) was on their side. In every divided ball or dispute, he inclined the pitch their way.

"It's not an excuse, but the truth is that, in this Copa, they kept on blowing for stupid things, for handballs, penalties.

"But today, they didn't even go to VAR when there were clear plays that should have been looked at."
