Lewis Hamilton eases to Spanish Grand Prix win to extend world championship lead

Lewis Hamilton eased to his fourth win of the season as he controlled the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Only the top three drivers finished on the same lap for the first time in since the Austria 2018 to further underline their dominance.

The Brit extended his lead at the top of the championship as Max Verstappen held off Valtteri Bottas to split the Mercedes after he got the jump on the Finn on the opening lap.

The Red Bull driver endeavoured to go with Hamilton in the early exchanges with his race pace expected to rival that of the Mercedes duo, but it was soon clear that was not going to be the case.

Hamilton pulled the pin in his first stint but was denied another Grand Slam having claimed pole position, led every lap but his team-mate registered the fastest lap on his final lap.

Bottas spent much of his afternoon trying to reel in Verstappen having briefly dropped to fifth by turn three on the opening lap.

He swiftly dealt with the Racing Point of Sergio Perez before dispatching with his team-mate Lance Stroll shortly after.

Mercedes pitted Bottas with 15 laps remaining and challenged him to chase down Verstappen but he was unable find the pace to trouble his rival.

Perez came home as best of the rest after another impressive display of tyre conservation despite being handed a five second penalty for ignoring blue flags in the latter stages.

Stroll completed another impressive afternoon for Racing Point as he came home fifth ahead of Carlos Sainz and Sebastien Vettel.

Renault endured a forgettable afternoon as their two cars finished outside the top ten with the team's senior figures in attendance.

Daniel Ricciardo's finished 11th - three places ahead of team-mate Estaban Ocon while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was the day's only retirement.
