Breaking: Leeds United end 28-year trophy drought after Brentford defeat seals Championship title

Leeds United have won the Championship title after Brentford fell to a 1-0 loss at Stoke City.

The Bees' defeat means that Marcelo Bielsa's men, who were last night celebrating promotion back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence, now have an unassailable lead at the top of the Championship table.

The Championship trophy is now heading to Elland Road, ending a 28-year wait for silverware in West Yorkshire.

The 1992 Division One title was the last time Leeds got their hands on a trophy and means the wild celebrations which kicked off last night when West Brom lost to Huddersfield to secure the Whites' promotion will continue.

Bielsa's side are in action again on Sunday afternoon when they face Derby County at Pride Park. They will now be expecting a guard of honour from the team that knocked them out of last season's playoffs in such a heartbreaking manner.

The 2019-20 Championship title is the club's 13th piece of silverware in their history and comes at the end of their centenary season which has also brought to an end the club's longest spell outside the top flight.

Following tomorrow's trip to Pride Park, Leeds will host Charlton Athletic at Elland Road in the final game of the season on what will be yet another day of celebration for the club at the end of an unforgettable season.
