Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Larry Junstrom has died aged 70

Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd star Larry Junstrom has passed away aged 70.

The rock star had to retire from the music industry in 2014 after he suffered a hand injury which required surgery.

Now tributes have poured in for the longstanding bassist after his former band .38 released a statement on their social media page announcing the sad news.

His cause of death is yet to be made known.

The statement on .38 Special's social media channels read: “The Big Man on the Big Bass has left us.

“He rocked arenas all over the world and succeeded in living his dream.

"He was truly one of a kind, a congenial travelling companion and a great friend to all with a humorous slant on life that always kept our spirits high – a kind man with a big heart for everyone who crossed his path.

"There will never be another like him.”

It went on: “We are sending our devoted love, strength and comfort to his wife Thania and Larry’s family.

"We will miss our friend and partner.”

Rocker Larry had a high-flying musical career spanning from when he first set up the band Skynyrd with his school friends in 1964.

The longstanding bassist rocked with the band until he was 1971.

But just five years later, he went onto join .38 Special alongside Donnie Va Zant.

The musician played a huge part in the band as he featured on the 12 studio albums; the last was released more than a decade ago in 2004.
