Konstantinos Mavropanos joins Stuttgart on loan and signs new Arsenal deal

Arsenal have confirmed that Konstantinos Mavropanos will be joining German side Stuttgart on loan next season after signing a new contract with the club.

The Greek centre-back spent the second half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Nuremberg where he played an instrumental role in saving the side from relegation in the Bundesliga 2.

Stuttgart will be playing in Germany's top flight next season, having earned automatic promotion by finishing second in the same division.

As revealed by football.london on July 13, Bundesliga interest in Mavropanos did not solely come from Stuttgart, but Werder Bremen were also in for the centre-back. However, having former Arsenal head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat proved to be key for Stuttgart.

Joining the German club last year as their sporting director, Mislintat has keen to show his excitement at being able to work alongside Mavropanos again after playing a key role in bringing him to north London in 2018.

“We are very happy that we were able to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos for one season from Arsenal," he told the club's official website.

"We've known each other since our time together at Arsenal, so I've been watching his development for a correspondingly long time.

"Konstantinos is strong in tackling, quick to start and suits us very well with his skills and ambition."

At Nuremberg, Mavropanos became one of the club's most reliable players very soon after joining in January and impressed largely when he played.

Moving to Stuttgart will give him his first chance to play regularly in one of Europe's top five leagues, however, and he is looking forward to that opportunity.

"Switching to VfB is a new challenge in my career," he told Stuttgart's official website.

"I thank the management and the trainer for the trust they have placed in me. My goal is to return this trust with good performances and to do my part for a successful VfB season."
