Knaphill crash: Boy, 5, crushed to death by van while riding bike

A five-year-old boy was crushed to death after he toppled off his bicycle and fell under the wheels of a passing van.

Paramedics and an off-duty midwife battled to resuscitate the child and an air ambulance crew including a doctor travelled with him in the back of an ambulance as he was driven to hospital.

He was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.

The little boy had been riding on his bike on a pavement near his home in Knaphill, Surrey on Tuesday afternoon when the tragedy happened.

It was not clear how he came to fall off the bike.

One of the first to arrive at the scene in Limecroft Road, Knaphill, was an off-duty midwife who gave the youngster CPR in a vain attempt to save his life. He had suffered major head injuries. He was rushed to Frimley Park Hospital.

A spokesman for Surrey Police appealed for any witnesses to the incident to contact them urgently, including any drivers who might have caught the incident on dash-cam footage.

"Officers were called to Limecroft Road at 4.10pm after a collision between a five-year-old boy on a bicycle and a van, which stopped at the scene.

"The boy, who was from the local area, did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased in hospital. His next of kin were present. An investigation into the incident is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

"The road was closed while officers carried out on-scene investigations but has since reopened. Officers are appealing for anyone with any information about what happened, including dashcam footage from the road to get in touch immediately on 101."

A post mortem examination is to be carried out on the child's body to ascertain the exact cause of his death and an inquest will be opened and adjourned later by the Surrey coroner.

Details of the boy's identity were being witheld by the police until the inquest is opened. ends
