Karina Vetrano: Chanel Lewis found GUILTY of murdering jogger after retrial

A man has been found guilty of murdering New York jogger Karina Vetrano after a retrial.

Karina, 30, was found dead after going for a run in a park more than two years ago.

The speech pathologist was grabbed as she ran along a secluded, marshy section of Spring Creek Park in the Howard Beach area of Queens in August 2016.

Today Chanel Lewis, the man accused of killing her, has been found guilty after a trial.

The 22-year-old now faces life without parole when he is sentenced later this month.

His lawyers had called for a mistrial, claiming police had withheld key evidence and alleged Lewis's confession was 'coerced'.

The killer's conviction brought to an end his second trial, the first having ended in a hung jury in November.

During the shocking attack Karina was punched in the face, thrown to the ground and violently sexually assaulted before being strangled, authorities said.

Lewis admitted hitting her but denied the sexual assault.

Haunting images of Karina's last moments were caught on CCTV before she was attacked.

The keen runner was found dead just a block from her home, five hours after the surveillance photo was captured at around 5.46pm on Tuesday August 2.

Her father Philip was part of the search party that discovered her body, face down, 15 feet from the trail.

Nearly six months after her death, Lewis was arrested after DNA evidence found underneath her fingernails linked him to the scene.

His lawyers, however, claimed the DNA evidence was suspect.

Lewis is set to be sentenced on April 17.
