John Terry’s Chelsea return confirmed amid major academy decision

Chelsea have confirmed the return of club icon John Terry as the former defender starts a coaching consultancy role at Cobham.

The Blues announced his appointment with a statement on Wednesday, with the 41-year-old expected to start work immediately following his exit from Aston Villa earlier this year.

Terry's role at the club will involve on-field coaching, coaching discussions, player mentoring, as well as dialogue with parents. The role will initially be on a part-time basis, with the former defender also honouring other commitments.

Chelsea’s head of youth development Neil Bath said: “We are delighted to be welcoming John back to Cobham in a role that will involve coaching and mentoring the next generation of young players in our Academy.

“It goes without saying that John’s experience in the game, both as a world-class player and more recently as an assistant coach in the Premier League, will be invaluable for everyone in the building.

“He will be a great mentor for our players and a fantastic asset to our coaching staff. We can’t wait for him to get started.”

The defender began his career with the Blues in 1998 and went on to make 717 appearances for the club, as well as earn a further 78 caps for the England national side.

Terry captained the Blues to five Premier League crowns, as well as five FA Cups, three League Cups, a Europa League and of course a Champions League crown.

He eventually left for Aston Villa in 2017 and following a season at Villa Park, retired to become Dean Smith's assistant manager at the club.

Terry departed Villa in July of 2021 to seek further opportunities in his career but has yet to be handed the reins on a managerial basis.
