Jamie Vardy blasts Wayne Rooney's evidence as 'nonsense' during Wagatha trial

Jamie Vardy has blasted Wayne Rooney as talking "nonsense" on the stand during the Wagatha trial.

The Leicester City striker's comments come following claims in court from Mr Rooney that he was told to tell Mr Vardy's wife Rebekah to "calm down" during the Euros in 2016.

Speaking on the high court steps, Mr Vardy said: “Wayne is talking nonsense. He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016.

“There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”

Today Mr Rooney gave evidence of his "awkward" alleged conversation with Mr Vardy regarding Rebekah Vardy.

He says: "It was awkward for me to have to speak to a team-mate regarding his wife."

Mr Rooney claims they went to a games room to sit down and have a chat. Mr Rooney had a coffee and Mr Vardy had a red bull.

He adds: "It was such an awkward moment for me to have to speak to him."

Mr Rooney claimed in court he "100%" had a chat with Mr Vardy, after he was asked to by the England manager at the time Roy Hodgson.

Rebekah Vardy previously told the court that her husband Jamie told her that he never had a talk with Wayne regarding her media activities causing trouble for the England squad during the Euros in 2016.

Wayne's wife Coleen and Rebekah have been embroiled in the bitter battle since Coleen accused Jamie Vardy's wife of leaking 'false stories' about her private life in October 2019.

Mum-of-four Coleen came to the conclusion after carrying out a month-long 'sting operation' where she used her Instagram Stories to post fake scenarios and seeing which ones ended up in the news.

Speaking in court on Tuesday, Mr Rooney claimed he was unaware of his wife's 'sting operation'.

The former Manchester United captain said that he "didn't want to get involved" as his wife became "frustrated" over alleged leaks.

He told the court: "“I’m not big on social media and I didn’t want to get involved.

“My wife is an independent woman who does her own thing and I didn’t want to get involved in what the situation was.”

He added that social media was the “least” of his worries amid helping his wife with their four children.

“She made me aware of it and that was the last time I actually spoke about it."

The trial continues.
