Italy earthquake: Tremor strikes close to region most devastated by coronavirus

An earthquake rocked northern Italy near Genoa this morning, an area devastated by coronavirus.

The quake, close to the town of Coli, was recorded at a magnitude of 4.7 in the Lombardy region - which has been badly affected by the coronavirus.

It was recorded at 9.42am local time (10.42am BST) with eyewitnesses saying the shock was felt in the provinces of Milan and Genoa.

Italy's Lombardy region is one of the country's worst hit by coronavirus, with more than 11,000 deaths to date.

A second quake recorded at a magnitude of 2, was felt around two hours after the first, in Solaro, about 10miles from Milan.

And a third of 2.6 and a fourth shock measuring 3.8 magnitude was recorded in the same area within hours of the first.

Back in early March, the Italian government quarantined the entire region of Lombardy and neighbouring areas - including Venice and Milan - in a bid to halt the spread of coronavirus.

The harsh measures meant that almost a quarter of its population - 16 million residents - were in quarantine.

Italy has been on of the European countries hit hardest by covid-19, with more than 21,000 deaths and 165,000 confirmed cases.

In the wake of the health emergency, an unprecedented decree from Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte banned people from leaving Lombardy and the surrounding areas, and was signed into law overnight.

Among the cities which people could no longer enter or leave are Milan, Italy's financial capital, tourist hotspot Venice and the cities of Parma and Rimini.

Mr Conte told a news conference in the middle of the night: "There will be no movement in or out of these areas, or within them, unless for proven, work-related reasons, emergencies or health reasons."
