Istanbul earthquake: Turkish city rocked by 5.7 magnitude tremor

Turkey's largest city Istanbul has been rocked by an earthquake, thought to have a magnitude of 5.7.

Witnesses have described large tremors as the quake struck at around 2pm local time.

Schools were evacuated in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

Earlier a smaller quake, with a magnitude of 2.9, had struck close to the city, which has 16 million inhabitants, while on Monday a 4.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded.

Following the latest incident, Laura Grace wrote on Twitter : "Woah. 5.7 earthquake just hit Istanbul and my whole flat rocked like crazy."

And Umar Farooq wrote: "Just felt two very strong shocks from an earthquake in Istanbul. The first one made me concerned, second made me jump, and I took waaay too long to get my things together and get out of the building."

Mobile phone coverage reportedly went down in the moments following the quake.

The epicentre of the quake was about 70 kilometres west of Istanbul in the Marmara Sea, south of the town of Silivri.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu wrote on his Twitter account that there were no immediate reports of damage or people hurt.

The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute said the epicentre of the quake was about 44 miles west of Istanbul in the Marmara Sea, south of the town of Silivri.

The tremor was at a depth of 12.6 km, Kandilli said. The United States Geological Survey also said it had a 5.7 magnitude.

In 1999 a quake measuring 7.6 struck the city of Izmit, 90km southeast of Istanbul, killing more than 17,000 people.
