Iran says revenge on US could be 'historical nightmare' as it considers 13 options

Iran is considering 13 nightmare “retaliation scenarios” against the US, a top official has warned.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, claimed that the vengeance for the death of top general Qassem Soleimani would not take the form of one operation.

He said leaders had discussed 13 options, and even if they agreed on the least devastating, it would still be "a historical nightmare for the United States”.

He did not give any further information about what the scenarios were.

It comes after Iranian officials pledged to force the US from the Middle East as a result of Friday’s bombing in Baghdad.

Shamkhani said: "The Americans should know that until now 13 revenge scenarios have been discussed in the council and even if there is consensus on the weakest scenario carrying it out can be a historic nightmare for the Americans."

According to the Tasnin news agency, he also said: "If the US troops do not leave our region voluntarily and upright, we will do something to carry their bodies horizontally out."

Yesterday more than a million Iranians filled the streets of Tehran to pay their respects to Qassan Soleimani, who died in Friday's attack in Baghdad.

The head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, told mourners in Soleimani's hometown of Kerman: "We will take revenge, a hard and definitive revenge".

And he added: "The martyr Qassem Soleimani is more dangerous to the enemy than Qassem Soleimani."

Mohsen Rezayee, who heads Iran's Expediency Council, said that Israel could also be targeted if the US strikes back.

He said: "If the US takes any action after our military response, we will level Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground."

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military commanders have said Iranian retaliation for the US action would match the scale of Soleimani's killing but that it would be at a time and place of Tehran's choosing.

MPs in Iranian parliament chant 'death to America'

Iran's parliament passed a bill designating all US forces "terrorists", adding: "Any aid to these forces, including military, intelligence, financial, technical, service or logistical, will be considered as cooperation in a terrorist act."

Lawmakers, who chanted "Death to America" after passing the bill, also voted to inject £170million into the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of the Revolutionary Guards.

Iran has offered an $80 million bounty on the US President after the general's death - although one brigadier today said even Trump's death would not be enough to avenge the assassination.
